Pechanga to deal women's, men's cards next week

Williams (33-0, 24 KOs) is listed at 6-feet-1, but he appeared considerably taller when he outpointed Antonio Margarito of Tijuana at The Home Depot Center in July 2007 and displaced Margarito as the WBO welter king.

With his height, Williams, from Augusta, Ga., demonstrated in getting past Margarito that he also is very fast. At Pechanga, Williams is to box Carlos Quintana (24-1-0, 19 KOs) in a bout that HBO is displaying.
Carvajal cut loose San Diego promoter/manager Bobby DePhilippis his severed his tie to bantamweight/featherweight Cruz Carvajal. DePhilippis was disappointed in Carvajal's most recent effort in Montreal. Longtime San Diego boxing figure Bumpy Parra, Carvajal's handler, is hoping to interest Golden Boy as Carvajal's promoter, according to DePhilippis.

DePhilippis decided not to enter into a promotional tie with Owen Beck, a heavyweight from Jamaica who lives in Nashville, Tenn., when Beck had one idea of who should be training him and DePhilippis had another.

It had been all positive

Just four days shy of a potential Super Bowl berth, Moss's own perfect season was interrupted yesterday by disturbing news from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where a woman whom Moss termed "a friend" filed a restraining order against him in Broward County Court.

Rachelle Washington's allegations included that Moss committed battery "causing serious injury," and that Moss refused to allow her to seek medical treatment. Washington also checked off "yes" next to inquiries on the petition whether the respondent (Moss) had a drug or alcohol problem, and claimed she had been in an "intimate relationship" with him since 1997.

The alleged incident happened while the Patriots were enjoying a bye week from the playoffs. Moss acknowledged being at Washington's home and said he has been friendly with her for 11 years, but vehemently denied the charges.

Clinton Allies May Dump Millions Into Anti-Obama Group

MANCHESTER, N.H. — A panicked and cash-short Clinton campaign is seriously considering giving up on the Nevada caucuses and on the South Carolina primary in order to regroup and to save resources for the massive 19-state mega-primary on February 5.

At the same time, some top independent expenditure groups supporting Clinton have been exploring the creation of an anti-Obama "527 committee" that would take unlimited contributions from a few of Clinton's super-rich backers and from a handful of unions to finance television ads and direct mail designed to tarnish the Illinois Senator's image.

The Clinton campaign has raised over $100 million, but has "only" $15 to $20 million left. It faces donor reluctance to give more in the face of the Iowa defeat and the prospect of a second loss in New Hampshire today.

AJCongress Chair On The Hot Seat

Jack Rosen, the chairman of the American Jewish Congress, may well face the first serious challenge to his longtime, dominant leadership of the organization at an executive board meeting scheduled for Jan. 30.

Some members of the board of trustees are expressing deep frustration and anger over Rosen’s alleged autocratic style, most recently over his decision to appoint Israel Singer chairman of the international policy council of the Council for World Jewry — an AJCongress offshoot Rosen helped create and chairs — after Singer was ousted from the World Jewish Congress for alleged financial misdeeds.

"Not only was it embarrassing to the name of the American Jewish Congress to try to resuscitate the reputation of someone associated with financial wrongdoings," one board member said, "but Jack acted unilaterally, against the rules.

Law keeps public in dark on police hiring practices

But buried inside were provisions that ever since have kept taxpayers in the dark about some of the most important management practices of public institutions in Texas.

The law forever closed to the public whole sections of city personnel files.

Because of this change, known as Section 143.089 of the Local Government Code, most Texas taxpayers — with the exception of Dallas — never can know how their police departments carry out the vital functions of vetting and evaluating recruits. They also can't readily know how thoroughly officers accused of misconduct are investigated.

Through the years, 143.089 has impeded the public from exploring these practices.

Emblematic of the problem is the case of former Police Officer Joseph Anthony Evans who, the San Antonio Express-News has learned, was hired in 1994 despite a checkered past that disqualified him from being a cop.
