Abbas, Olmert vow to avert crisis

But senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat warned Israel against shifting responsibility for Gaza on to Egypt.

"Israel is fully responsible and any games to try to divert this responsibility to Egypt is absolutely unacceptable," he told reporters.

The United Nations estimated that at least 700 000 Gazans — nearly half the population of 1.5 million — have crossed since Wednesday.

The large majority of Palestinians in Gaza depend on aid and the territory still relies on Israel for most of its electricity and industrial-grade diesel for its sole power plant.

Israel's supreme court heard a petition by a rights groups on Sunday asking that the state be ordered to restore fuel supplies, but adjourned without issuing a ruling.

Internet Gambling Deserves a New Chance

Internet gaming operators are more in tune with clients' well being than any land-based casino. Thanks to technology, we can track and monitor every transaction coming into our system, assuring that no player can lose more than a limited number of dollars daily, weekly, and monthly. Our payment processors are very restrictive as to these policies and ensure that we comply, or we don't get paid (we do not accept cash). And as far as kids playing online, it is virtually impossible. Once again ID verification technology and credit card companies' databases play a major role in preventing unauthorized credit card use. We require proper ID when accepting credit card deposits and payments. The U.S. government fears online gambling only because the profits go to companies domiciled in outlying jurisdictions.

Businesses pledge price drops as loonie rises

Two of Canada's biggest retailers — Wal-Mart and Zellers — say they're lowering prices on some goods to better reflect the rapidly rising Canadian dollar that has gone past parity with U.S. currency.

Zellers, a unit of Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), said Friday it would launch a special "price cut" promotion to allow Canadian consumers to "capitalize on the benefits of the rising dollar."

It said it would cut prices on a range of items in all Zellers stores.

"We understand that the rising Canadian dollar has led to a demand for lower pricing and this is our attempt to provide real savings for Canadian families," HBC president Rob Johnston said in a release.

Recent price comparisons have shown identical items are often priced more than 20 per cent higher in Canada than in the U.S.

Steinem Makes Excuses for Hillary

The Bush White House is seriously considering making Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne the next administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. In today's Idaho Statesman, Wayne Hoffman quotes Kempthorne saying he "would have to consider" any offer from the president. That means he wants the job. Kempthorne also said that he's been in periodic contact with White House staffers about the job. The Wall Street Journal's "Washington Wire" column predicted July 18 that Bush would wait until the Senate recess before announcing Kempthorne as his choice. The recess began Friday.

If it is Kempthorne, Bush will have made a comically anti-environmental choice. During six years in the Senate in the 1990s, Kempthorne scored a "0" on the League of Conservation Voters' legislative scorecards every year except 1993, when Kempthorne scored 6 percent on the basis of one little-remembered vote against funding a rocket booster for the space program that environmentalists judged harmful to the environment.

Keating, McClelland at Suharto funeral

Mr Suharto, 86, was laid to rest beside his wife Siti Harinah Suharto, in their family mausoleum on the outskirts of Solo, in Central Java following his death in a Jakarta hospital yesterday. Mr McClelland, who is acting Foreign Minister while Stephen Smith is in the United States, said he was unable to stay longer for scheduling reasons, but will return in April, when he will also visit the US and UK. The pair attended today's funeral with Australia's Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer. "It expresses our sympathy to the Indonesian people on the loss of a leader of very long standing,'' he said. "It respects the office that he held and effectively confirms the Rudd Government commitment to an ongoing, strong and supportive relationship with Indonesia.'' "We recognise also his achievements ...
