New rules will kill us, grouper fishers say

Commercial fishermen have historically caught more red grouper, but gag has made up about one-third of the catch in recent years. Restaurants often charge a premium for gag because many people think it tastes and flakes better than red grouper. Menus often label gag as "black grouper" because it sounds better.

Though some grouper are caught in the Atlantic Ocean, most are caught in the relatively shallow water off Florida's West Coast. When federal biologists decided about two years ago that gag stocks were in trouble, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council began to study how best to cut back.

Tuesday's action was a vote of the council's Reef Fish Management Committee. The full council will hear public comment today and then vote to accept the committee's recommendation in full or tweak it.

Costly road to citizenship

Tabios, who works a full-time job as a property manager at Bay View Vista Apartments in Vallejo and then goes to a retail job at a shoe store at night, said it is necessary if she is going to become a citizen and move family here from the Philippines.

"I want to petition my brother (for permission to immigrate) but because fees have gone up so much, we can't afford it," Tabios said. "Life is hard in the Philippines, and we want my brother to come here for a better life."

However, there is help available for families like these who can't afford to have their family join them in the land of opportunity.

On Saturday, the California Human Development Corporation, a nonprofit that provides help with naturalization and immigration, is sponsoring a Free Citizenship Fair in Vallejo.

Heath Ledger, Brad Renfro Deaths Raise The Question: Why Are Paparazzi ...

But even the biggest male stars, like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, barely make it to the 10 percent mark. Smith estimates that Pitt is "5 to 7 percent" of the market, Cruise, "another 5 to 10 percent," with added value if they're with their significant others and children.

"Any time a celebrity gets pregnant, it gives them a big career boost," Wieselman said. "And once they have the baby? People are more interested in Kingston Rossdale than his parents [Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale] at times. 'Oh, there's Kingston being cute again.' You don't even need a story to go with that."

"Heath wasn't a great shot unless he was with Naomi Watts or Heather Graham or Michelle Williams, or if there was a baby in the picture," Smith said. "It's not about Orlando Bloom walking to get coffee, but that he was last seen with Kirsten Dunst, or whoever the flavor of the week is for him.

Bishnoi may force triangular contests

Even though a third front of political parties is yet to materialise at the national level, Haryana will certainly witness triangular fights the next time it goes to the election provided Bhajan Lal and sons are able to set up shop in coming December.

In the last Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, the contest for all practical purposes was between the INLD and the Congress with the latter inflicting grievous wounds on the former in both. Though other parties like the BJP were in the fray, but their presence was nominal in most of the constituencies.

However, the next parliamentary election whenever it takes place is likely to witness the Congress, INLD and the Bishnois yet unnamed political outfit slug it out inside the polling stations.

While the Congress and the INLD are well entrenched and are certain to contest all seats, sources close to the Bishnoi camp say their leaders will be the first to announce their organisations candidates for all constituencies as soon as the election is announced thus making sure that the fights are triangular.

Never let the refs decide the outcome

PARKERSBURG —If anyone is subjected more to criticism than opinionated sports columnists, it is the referees who adjudicate sports events. Most of those events take place on one of the participating team's home courts before a highly-partisan crowd that views their team through rose-colored glasses and the opposing squad as the enemy. Anyone who was at or even watched on TV West Virginia University's Saturday night basketball game at the Coliseum against Georgetown will attest to the boisterous pro-WVU crowd. There was a seat in every seat. And this crowd came to make some noise and create a hostile environment for Georgetown. If every West Virginia basketball game — at least the meaningful ones —could witness the same atmosphere, WVU's already huge home-court advantage would be even greater.
