Pre-S.C. Questions: 1) If Hillary comes in third in South Carolina, will Time's Mark Halperin still insist it was a stroke of genius for her to have "[f]orced Obama to spend an entire week in South Carolina while H. Clinton traveled to Super Tuesday states"? ... 2) Did anybody in those Super Tuesday states pay much attention to her? ... 3) If Edwards can steal the white male vote from her in South Carolina, what's to stop him from doing the same thing on Super Tuesday in states like Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee--even Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Idaho and Utah? ... 1:19 A.M.

Harley dealer says bids unfair

Getting the contract to outfit the Montgomery police in motorcycles isn't only about the hundreds of thousands of dollars added to a dealership's bottom line. Just as important are the prestige and the publicity that Harley Davidson or BMW gets every time an officer cruises down the street.

The motorcycle manufacturers know both the money and the intangibles are important. The local Harley Davidson dealer, though, doesn't think he's getting a fair shot at either.

Timothy A. Russom, president of Harley Davidson of Montgomery Inc., sent a letter to Mayor Bobby Bright and three other city officials pointedly questioning the fairness of the city's bidding process for the Police Department's motorcycle contract. Bright and the Police Department stand firm that the process is transparent.

Officials differ on charter response

Personally, I agree with some and I think some are very wrong-headed ideas, borne out of prejudice against current officeholders.

The KCOQ folks are politicians as well. They have their agendas as well. And as long as everyone understands that when considering these proposals, we can evaluate the proposals in that light and make informed decisions.

Montclair's student gov't stops the press

Most college newspapers, such as the one I used to work on at another state college in New Jersey, are funded in large part through the Student Government Association. This does not mean, however, that the newspaper is a puppet of the SGA, free only to publish what the SGA deems acceptable, nor does it give the SGA the right to take away the newspaper's freedom to print, on paper or otherwise, an issue.

The writer of the previous comment seems awfully sure of himself -- I wonder, though, if (s)he has read the comments of his/her own administration or those of the Student Press Law Center in various articles printed about this matter (by papers the Montclair State SGA, fortunately, has no control over). The SGA's actions here have been extremely foolish, and the longer they persist the worse the outcome is likely to be for those responsible.

British PM Outlines UK's Afghanistan Role

Gordon Brown has explained the ongoing role of British troops in Afghanistan in a statement to Parliament.

Speaking to MPs after the weekly Prime Minister's Questions session, the PM said that priorities for the country entailed Afghan "ownership" of police and security, political reconciliation, reconstruction and international commitment to long-term development.

The PM said:

"Britain will continue to fulfil our obligations to the Afghan people and the international community. We will support the Afghan army, police and government as they progressively take over greater responsibility for their own security. And we will work with our international partners and help the Afghans themselves strengthen their stability, foster democracy, and build prosperity. .
