Fike H.S. Coach Facing Sex Offense Charge

Wilson — A former Fike High School physical education teacher and wrestling coach faces a felony charge of sexual offense and a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

David Brandon Earp, 33, of Sims, was charged Friday, authorities said. He resigned from the Wilson County Schools on Saturday, the school system said.

The system had hired Earp in August, according to Robert Kendall, the system's public relations director.

The case began after a parent told Fike Principal Steve Ellis of a text message found on a student's cell phone that suggested inappropriate behavior, officials said. Ellis contacted schools Superintendent Larry E. Price.

Price contacted the sheriff's office, but deputies reported Jan.


LSSU issues 33rd Annual List of Banished Words

SAULT STE. MARIE - The wordsmiths at Lake Superior State University are giving back to English speakers everywhere with their 33rd annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.

On Dec. 31, 1975, former LSSU Public Relations Director Bill Rabe and his colleagues cooked up an idea to banish overused words and phrases and issue a list on New Year's Day. Much to the delight of language enthusiasts everywhere, the list has stayed the course into a fourth decade.

This year's list derives from more than 2,000 nominations received through the university's website, www.lssu.edu/banished. Word-watchers

target pet peeves from everyday speech, as well as from the news, education, technology, advertising, politics, sports and more.

JCPenney store in downtown Coudersport slated for closure

COUDERSPORT — Downtown Coudersport could be facing a tough blow in February with the closing of the JCPenney store, an anchor tenant in the business district.Tim Lyons, public relations officer for the merchandising giant, confirmed plans by JCPenney corporate offices to close the store, eliminating 12 jobs. He described the closing as a "difficult business decision."

Several efforts are under way by business leaders and government officials in Coudersport to save the store, but local leaders concede that the prospects are dim."Losing JCPenney could really hurt Coudersport," said Stan Swank, a vice-president with the Coudersport Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. "People come to Coudersport to shop at JCPenney and then they stop at other businesses, which helps our economy."The Coudersport store has been at the same location since opening in 1930.


2500 soldiers take position in Swat, action against Maulana Fazlullah ...

SWAT+RAWALPINDI: The Security forces have taken Position in mountainous valley of swat and closed various main highways for every type of traffic to maintain law and order there.

Confirming the deployment of security forces, Director General Inter Public Service Relations (ISPR) and Army Spokesman Maj. Gen. Waheed has said that about 2500 Personnel has been deployed in Swat on request of local administration.

He said that the main reason behind the deployment of forces was to curb the activities of Maulana Fazlullah, besides ensuring law and order in Swat, a mountain valley popular with tourists.

Fresh caravan of troops comprised of more than 500 vehicles arrived in Swat, which were being deployed in Mangora, Faza Gut, Mangalore, Char Bagh, Khawaza, Kabal, Kanju and Matta and other areas.
