| SGPC again expands itself
The SGPC today promoted five employees as assistant secretaries and two as additional secretaries, making the mini parliament of the Sikhs top-heavy. Avtar Singh today issued the promotion orders, which were his first order after becoming SGPC president for the third consecutive year. Interestingly, the SGPC had four full-fledged secretaries against one post during the tenure of Gurcharn Singh Tohra, who reigned the SGPC for 27 years. With the new promotions, the number of assistant secretaries and additional secretaries has risen to 15 and eight, respectively. Though the SGPC chief has claimed that the promotions will not put any additional burden on the exchequer of the SGPC, insiders say the newly promoted employees will be entitled to use the additional facilities like telephone, official vehicle etc.
Smart Choices: A worthy 'coach' for heart health
Joe Piscatella spent the first half of his life eating whatever he liked. He's spending the second half eating healthily. That's why he's still alive today. He might be the person to help you save your own life. As his Web site attests, the best-selling author of heart-healthy books is "no ordinary Joe." Piscatella was at North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio recently where he delivered lectures on healthy eating and lifestyle to medical professionals and the public. "One of the physicians had seen him speak and was impressed," said Karen May, regional director of public relations for the Baptist Health System. "Baptist is upgrading and expanding its cardiac program, and this was an excellent way to help people associate Baptist with good heart care, preventative treatment and follow-up rehabilitation." Piscatella has been preaching heart-healthy eating for decades and exploring the link between stress and how we use food in response.
Mystery man comes to rescue of stricken hunter
Very quickly I couldn't get my leg to move at all. It felt numb but hurt like crazy at the same time. Nothing like that had ever happened to me before. Lots of things crossed my mind." He had been treated for an aneurysm and wondered if that might be involved. "I had no idea but whatever it was, it was pretty frightening." Unable to walk, Mr. Capone said he recalled the Marine crawl he learned during his Marine training. Except, with his leg immobile, "that didn't work as I remembered." But he found that lying on his stomach, he could shove the butt of his unloaded shotgun into the ground and drag himself about five feet at a time. "Not really the Marine crawl but it worked." He made slow progress but his good knee soon was rubbed raw and his concerns were mounting.
Piano Wire Puppeteers: The Constitution, Media & Dennis Kucinich
It's been an odd week. For me, a particularly odd week. But that's another story. So, wait a minute. Iran DOESN'T have nuclear weapon capability??? So, who are we gonna bomb? I want to bomb somebody! Didn't Senator Clinton just vote in essence to give President Bush the power to bomb Iran? If he had done it last week, would that have made her right? I mean, if she knew then what she knows now? Or am I getting that backward? Golly, I'm confused. And what about President Bush? This week, Vladimir Putin, the man Mr. Bush said he "Looked into the eyes of and found to be very straightforward and trustworthy." So much so, he was "able to get a sense of his soul." Well that soulful fella has just successfully coalesced the most dangerous power base in Russia since the Cold War amid rumors that include allegations he ordered the assassinations of journalists and imprisonment of noted proponents of freedom (Oops).
Lucknow, January 13
Earlier, he had led a Samajwadi Party delegation to the Raj Bhawan. The former chief minister asked Governor T.V. Rajeswar to order a high-level inquiry into the January 9 police firing in his ancestral village of Sefai in Etawah causing the death of a student, Mukesh Yadav. Demanding the immediate suspension and arrest of Etawah SSP S.R.S. Aditya, additional SP Rampal Gautam and other police officers responsible for opening fire, Yadav charged that they had fired on unarmed students that amounted to cold-blooded murder. According to Yadav, the police had forced its way inside the Choudhury Charan Singh Postgraduate College in Hewra, Sefai. The students were taking their examinations when the cops entered the premises and began hurling abuses at them. When the students protested, the SSP opened fire killing Mukesh Yadav on the spot while two other students Avinish Yadav and Sunil Yadav were seriously injured and are under treatment, Yadav said.
Boxer: Guilty of Mommyism!
But Japanese total labor costs are comparable, even with Detroit's higher health insurance costs. Increasingly, Japanese cars are being assembled in the USA, and the quality holds up just fine. So what's wrong with GM? The cars. GM is famous for being run by bean counters and ad men. Toyota is run by engineers.' This is a common viewpoint, I've found, among my Democratic friends--Jon Alter, this means you!***--who would never actually buy a Detroit product but who want to believe the UAW can't be blamed. The argument seems to be roughtly this: a) American cars are now reliable enough, having closed the gap with the Japanese brands, so b) the workers are doing their job; therefore c) if Detroit cars like the G6 are still obviously inferior--tacky and cheap, with mediocre handling--it must be because they're designed badly by white collar professionals, not because they're built badly by blue collar union members.
