Local youth center, founded in honor of AIDS victim, receives $25,000 ...

The Christopher Wahl Youth Center grew out of WRHAP in 2004 to focus more on young people in the area.

It provides information and support that will enhance their opportunities to improve their quality of life.

The center does this through educational activities that teach gang prevention, diminish transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV and reduce unintended pregnancies.

The center's work, under the guidance of WRHAP Executive Director Elizabeth Mendia, was recently rewarded with a $25,000 grant from Macy's Passport, a program dedicated to the awareness and eventual eradication of HIV/AIDS.

"People of conviction began this fight, and people of compassion must keep it going until education and treatment are available to all, and there is finally a vaccine that will rid the world of this devastating disease," said Robert Mettler, chairman and CEO of Macy's West.

Gibbons Announces New Auto Theft Task Force

We are sending a message to all the cars thefts in the state that you are not welcome here," said Metro Lt. Robert Duvall.

The Nevada Insurance Council and several car insurance companies will buy some bait cars to put on the streets in other parts of Nevada. They're hoping this partnership with state law enforcement will take away Nevada's title as the number one state for auto theft.

"They deserve to be caught -- have jail time, and citizens deserve to be protected from these individual," said Duvall.

The Auto Theft and Insurance Fraud Task Force will also investigate organized insurance fraud and look into other methods to curb the car theft problem. They are expected to report their findings to the Governor Gibbons by October 1st.

Can England retain the Ashes?

Strauss may not be such a 'talisman', but he has more management and leadership skills, the tactical know-how and intelligence, plus the slight distance required in leaders, to do well.
P.S. Strauss' batting also improves when he is captain.

Rich Cuthill, London, UK

Is that similar to the unattractive and triumphalist crowing from the English when they won the Ashes last year??

Power cuts strand travelers in China

Power cuts blamed on ice and unusually heavy snowfall yesterday left about 100,000 people waiting for trains in the key southern Chinese rail hub of Guangzhou, state media reported.

Air travel has also been affected, with numerous flights delayed out of Shanghai, where light snow was falling.

The bad weather comes at the worst possible time for travelers and transport authorities, as the country moves into the peak Lunar New Year travel season with tens of millions of Chinese on the move by train, plane and bus.

CUTS

Most of the delays were blamed on cuts that left 136 electric passenger trains stranded on the tracks in Hunan Province, which lies at the midpoint of the main Beijing-Guangzhou railway, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The logjams, which also struck as far away as Kunming in the country's southwest, have been compounded by a slowdown in bus travel because of the closure of icebound highways.
