The Latest Headlines...

Within years, the Croatian nation became synonymous with that of the Nazis. Sadly, in many cases of western literature, the false accusation stuck.

With his songs, Thompson has for some reason warranted the ire of many anti-Croatian Greater-Serbian nationalists and their well-paid public-relation mouthpieces their lobbies employ. They have still not come to terms that they were on the losing side of a war of aggression that Milosevic's Serbia committed against Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. They have still not come to terms with the fact that Croatia is an independent country proud of its recent victory on the battle-field against criminal aggression. Croatia's enemies have since conducted a defamation campaign against all Croats, not just Thompson. It is their hope to stifle Croatia's chance at entry into the European Union.

Bredesen issues State of the State Address

Once again I stand before you, my sixth time, to report on the State of our State and to present a budget prepared in accordance with the requirements of our Constitution. I recognize that the national economy is slowing, and Im proud that the soundness of our fiscal situationa soundness we have built togetherhelps us navigate these stormy waters safely. The budget I am recommending is a back to basics one. It is realistic for the times, it is honestly balanced, it does not call on reserves, and it calls
for no new taxes.

As I have done each year, I want to begin with the recognition that tonight there are thousands of Tennesseans serving our nation abroad. As of this evening 95 of these soldiers have lost their lives in this service, 19 of them since I addressed you last year.

January 2008

Ron Paul argued that "the government does have a responsibility, but it's supposed to lower taxes, get rid of regulations and devise a monetary policy that makes some sense."

The five Republican rivals spent part of the evening attacking Sen. Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton - almost nary a word was heard of Sen. Barack Obama and former Senator John Edwards. Former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney, asked about running against the Clinton and her husband, replied "I frankly can't wait because the idea of Bill Clinton back in the White House with nothing to do is something I can't imagine,"

The most intriguing part of the evening was the blunt questions that Tim Russert and Brian Williams of NBC asked the candidates. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was asked about why his poll numbers are going south in a state where he has campaigned so consistently, to which he replied that he was like the New York Giants - no one expected them to win, but they did, and so would he.

Soviet Jewry movement born on Cleveland’s West side

A recent JTA article notes that 2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the worldwide Soviet Jewry movement.This grass-roots effort involving Jews and non-Jews all over America resulted in the emigration of more than one million Soviet Jews. Activists from Beth Israel-The West Temple on Cleveland's West side, where the international movement to free Soviet Jews began, dispute that timetable. Their campaign, they say, began in October, 1963, with the establishment of the Cleveland Committee on Soviet Anti-Semitism (CCSA). Ahead of politicians, diplomats and the Jewish establishment, this handful of Clevelanders was raising awareness and training other groups long before 1967.By April, 1964, there was enough grass-roots attention to organize an American Jewish Conference on Soviet Jewry in Washington, D.C.Researching modern history .

Fortis transformation reflected in new top management structures

Fortis will restructure its top management as of 1 January 2008.[1] The Executive Committee will be recomposed and responsibilities redistributed. A Business Executive Committee - which will replace the Fortis Management Committee - will be installed and will operate in closest collaboration with a Group Executive Committee. 1. The Group Executive Committee will consist of:

* Jean-Paul Votron, CEO and Executive Director (Audit reports directly to the CEO);

* Herman Verwilst, Deputy CEO and Executive Director (Human Resources, Public and External Affairs, Business Transformation Office report to the Deputy CEO);

Reed Smith Environmental Group Defects to Saul Ewing

Steven Picco, a leading environmental lawyer in New Jersey for 25 years, is heading a five-lawyer defection from the Princeton, N.J., office of international giant Reed Smith to the cozier confines of 250-lawyer regional firm Saul Ewing.

The move brings to 15 the number of lawyers in Saul Ewing's Princeton office and is part of the firm's goal of increasing the size of its New Jersey operations, it announced Monday. There is also a nine-lawyer office in Newark.

Joining Picco are environmental lawyers Andrea Lipuma, Tom Burns and Cristina Stummer and insurance lawyer Paige Berry.

The move ends Picco's decade with Reed Smith, which had 380 lawyers and the ambition to have many more when he joined in 1997 during a wave of migration to out-of-state firms by homegrown New Jersey lawyers.
